In February 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved year-round sale of E15 – 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline – in eight Midwest states beginning April 25, 2025. E15 is available in much of the country, but selling it year-round currently involves gaining emergency waivers from EPA for summer sales. Year-round E15 availability could benefit rural communities, consumers and farmers.
The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ government affairs team in Washington, D.C., in collaboration with ethanol trade associations, are working with Congress and the Biden administration to allow E15 sales year-round throughout the country. Dan Mauer, a member of the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ government affairs team, says long-term access to lower-cost, lower-carbon fuels like E15 benefits farmers and American drivers. “We’re working hard to bring people together, have their voices heard and get to a place where we can finally get nationwide E15 sales year-round.”
In the near term, the EPA is deciding whether it will issue emergency waivers to allow sale of the fuel blend this summer.
E15 benefits rural communities
One benefit of using ethanol is reflected in its cost. Using E15, often referred to as Unleaded 88, is often significantly cheaper than gasoline with lower ethanol blends or no ethanol.
Mauer explains E15 also offers environmental benefits by being a low-carbon fuel. “The current administration is focused on lowering the carbon footprint of the transportation sector. E15 helps accomplish environmental goals while still benefiting rural economies.”
Year-round E15 sales could also bring more market certainty to corn farmers. “With this policy change, there would more consistent demand for farmers to send bushels of corn to ethanol plants,” Mauer adds.
Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ advocates for expanded E15 access
As a refiner, an ethanol producer and a farmer-owned cooperative, Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ is in a unique position to speak on a legislative solution to year-round E15, Mauer says. “We’re working with the right groups, including the Renewable Fuels Association, to find a solution that works for all stakeholders and get year-round E15 passed for the country.”
